When you step into this old-school West Village shop, the smell of fresh roasting beans fills the air. The shelves are packed with jars, sacks and dark brown beans, along with tea-making equipment, coffee accessories, and sugar.
Porto Rico was first opened in 1907 Porto Rico was founded by Italian immigrants Patsy Albanese. Greenwich Village at the time was experiencing an influx Italian immigrants, who had opened businesses in order to meet their culinary needs. Porto Rico offers 130 different varieties of beans, which includes those from around the globe at three locations, including Bleecker Street, Essex Market, and online. Porto Rico also roasts its own beans and provides wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.
Peter Longo, current owner and president, was raised in the family bakery on Bleecker Street, where his father was the owner of Porto Rico. He still runs the business in the same way like his father and grandfather.
Sey Coffee
Sey Coffee, a coffee shop and roaster is located on Grattan Street, in Morgantown. This Brooklyn neighborhood, in the Bushwick district is located on Grattan Street. Tobin Polk, Lance Schnorenberg and their 33-year-old co-founders began roasting coffee in an apartment on the fourth floor, just around the corner in the year 2011. They called it Lofted Coffee. Local clients included Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart services Peddler and Peddler.
Sey's decision to buy micro-lots or whole harvests, from single farmers has earned it the respect of New York City coffee enthusiasts. Last year they made a 6-bag micro-lot purchase of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai 785 from Brazil's Espirito Santo region. The beans were handpicked at the peak of ripeness, then floated to get rid of any imperfections, then dry fermented for 36 hours prior to being dried on the farm. The result is a blend with hints of berry lemongrass and melon.
Sey's commitment goes beyond its shop to improve the overall well-being of staff and farmers, and customers. It uses composts and biodegradable disposables to keep waste from landfills. This helps to reduce greenhouse gases and helps nourish the soil. It also does away with gratuity, which puts baristas in a position to support their livelihoods and motivate them to focus on their craft.
La Cabra
La Cabra is a modern specialty coffee company founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. The company started with a modest store and a committed staff. Their innovative and honest approach to providing an outstanding coffee experience has earned them a loyal following, not just in their own town but all over the world.
La Carba has a rigorous process to find their perfect beans, searching through hundreds of different varieties a year to find the ones that are perfect for their tastes. They then roast them very lightly, adjusting their desired flavor profile. This gives their coffees an enhanced taste and clarity.
The East Village store opened last October with a sleek and minimalist design, and has been praised by global coffee aficionados for its exacting pour-overs and baked goods supervised by head baker Jared Sexton, who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.
The shop utilizes a La Marzocco Modbar and the cups, plates, and bowls are custom-designed by Wurtz ceramics, a father-and son studio located in Horsens. In a recent interview, Atlanta Coffee Shops General Manager Ian Walla revealed that La Cabra serves 250 different types of coffee per day and usually has seven or eight coffees available at any time.
The Roasting Plant Coffee
The Roasting Plant is the only multi-unit retailer of coffee which roasts on-site and brews on demand, with each cup of coffee being roasted and brewed to your specifications in less than minutes. It searches far and far to find the finest specialty beans, which are directly sourced providing customers with choice and quality.
Their on-site roaster is a fluid bed machine which is different from traditional drum machines that are used in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown through an enclosed box that is heated and has high-speed and circulating air. This keeps the beans in suspension and allows for a constant roasting rate.
I tried the Sumatran Coffee and it was smooth and rich with a rich and velvety taste. Dark chocolate was evident from the aroma. And as you sipped the coffee you could taste subtle citrus fruit flavors.
The roasted coffee is then transported to the store's Eversys super-automatic brewing systems and brewed to your specification in under a minute. Customers can select from a selection of nine single origin choices and a range of blends.
Parlor Coffee
Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 behind a barbershop, equipped with a single group espresso machine. It has since developed into a flourishing coffee roastery, whose coffee beans are sold in top cafes, restaurants, and home brewers across the city. Parlor Coffee is dedicated to sourcing only the finest quality beans, which have been through a lengthy journey before arriving at its roasters.
According to their own words, they "have an unstoppable passion for craft and believe that good coffee should be available to everyone." They achieve this by putting their home-like street space, which includes compost bins, a chalkboard welcome handmade up-cycled products, and low-frills deco.
They roast and create their own blends as well as single-origins (there were six at the time I was there) They also hold cuppings on Sundays, and are open to the public. Think of it like a tasting room for breweries. You can smell and taste the ground beans, ranging from chocolaty earthy (one was almost tomato-like!).
